AFTER-SCHOOL
Marine Science Program
4-8 Week Introductory and Research Courses
The Research Scholars, Marine Science Program, based at the Center of Marine Conservation and Biodiversity (CMBC) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) offers online and in-person introductory and guided research courses in various marine science topics. All courses are offered for pre-college credit.
Internship Program
Semester Research
The Research Scholars Marine Science Internship Program offers competitive youth that have participated in a Tier 2 course to continue their research projects and ongoing projects in partnership with the Aburto Lab at SIO. Students typically work on projects on Saturdays under the guidance of staff and mentors.

Our Tier 2 summer residential course offers select students the chance to engage in hands-on, cutting-edge research at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Students will be matched with research themes that align with their interests and guided by experts in the field. This course provides valuable mentorship and practical experience, offering a head start for those interested in pursuing a career in marine science.
Hawai'i Program
10-Day Field Research Experience
The Research Scholars Marine Science – Hawaii Program offers a transformative educational experience on the island of Oahu, where students engage deeply with place-based knowledge and environmental education. This immersive program seeks to bridge traditional Hawaiian knowledge systems with contemporary scientific practices, fostering a holistic understanding of ecological stewardship and cultural heritage.
